Discussing influencers and online trends

Navigating the Insta-World: Learning German Through Influencers

Okay, so here I am, six months in Berlin, and let’s be honest, the biggest culture shock hasn’t been the U-Bahn or the price of a beer. It’s the everything. The constant buzz, the way everyone seems glued to their phones, and the sheer volume of… well, stuff everyone’s sharing. I’ve quickly realized that if I want to actually understand what people are talking about – and, you know, maybe even participate – I need to get better at talking about influencers and online trends in German. It felt overwhelming at first, but I’m starting to get a grip.

My First Confusion: “Süchtig”

The first few weeks, I kept hearing “süchtig” tossed around. My German friend, Lena, was talking about this influencer who made videos of herself trying ridiculously complicated beauty routines. She said, “Ich bin total süchtig nach diesem Typen!” I just stared. “Süchtig?” I asked. “Like… addicted?” Lena laughed, explaining that “süchtig” means addicted, but in this context, it just meant she really liked the influencer’s content. It’s a really common word, but seeing it used like that felt… different. I started noticing it everywhere – “süchtig nach TikTok,” “süchtig nach Instagram.” It’s a good reminder that even common words can have slightly different connotations than you expect.

Talking About Trends on the U-Bahn

This week, I was crammed onto the U-Bahn with a group of students, and they were completely obsessed with this new dance trend they were seeing on TikTok. One of them, Max, was filming it with his phone, shouting, “Schau mal, wie cool das ist!” (Look how cool that is!). I joined in, trying to mimic the moves. Let’s just say I wasn’t very good. Max and the others were laughing good-naturedly. “Du musst dich mal richtig einspielen!” (You need to practice properly!), one of them said. “Versuch es nochmal! Vielleicht wird es ja ein viraler Trend!” (Try it again! Maybe it’ll become a viral trend!). I realized I needed to learn more about how Germans talk about trends – it’s not just about saying something is “cool.” They use phrases like “viraler Trend” and “einspielen” (to rehearse, get used to something) constantly.

Key Phrases for the Social Scene

Here are some phrases that have been really helpful for me:

  • “Er/Sie ist ein Influencer” (He/She is an influencer) – I heard a colleague, Thomas, talking about a fitness influencer, and this is the go-to phrase.
  • “Was schaust du auf TikTok/Instagram/YouTube?” (What are you watching on TikTok/Instagram/YouTube?) – A classic starter question! I’ve used it a million times.
  • “Ich finde das total interessant/lustig/toll!” (I find that totally interesting/funny/great!) – A good way to express your opinion.
  • “Das ist total viral!” (That’s totally viral!) – Knowing what “viral” means is crucial.
  • “Kannst du mir das erklären?” (Can you explain that to me?) – Don’t be afraid to ask! Germans are generally happy to help if you’re genuinely trying to understand.

A Slight Misunderstanding (and a Helpful Correction)

I was talking to my landlord, Herr Schmidt, about this influencer who was promoting a new energy drink. I excitedly told him, “Dieser Influencer ist sehr populär!” (This influencer is very popular!). He looked at me strangely. “Populär? Nein, nein. ‘Beliebt’ ist besser. ‘Populär’ klingt, als ob er ein Politiker ist!” (No, no. ‘Beliebt’ is better. ‘Populär’ sounds like he’s a politician!). He explained that “beliebt” means popular in a more general sense, and “populär” carries a different, more political connotation. Wow. I really needed that correction! It’s shown me how important it is to pay attention to nuance in German.

Moving Forward: Immersion is Key

Honestly, the best way I’m learning is just… observing. I follow some German influencers (mostly fashion and lifestyle – I’m still figuring out my own taste!), and I listen to people talking about them in cafes and on the street. It’s a slow process, and I definitely make mistakes, but I’m starting to feel more comfortable navigating this Instagram-obsessed world. My goal now is to not just understand the words, but also the culture around them. And who knows, maybe I’ll even become an influencer myself… (probably not, but a girl can dream!).
