The first real taste of this came last week. I was trying to get to Potsdam for the day, and I completely messed up my S-Bahn ticket. I tried explaining my situation to the ticket inspector – a very serious-looking man – and panicked. I started babbling, completely in English, about how I’d made a mistake and I needed to explain. He just kept repeating, “Ihr haben ein Problem?” (You have a problem?). It’s a classic example of a “wenn…dann…” (if…then…) clause.

I’m still a long way off being fluent, and I’m definitely still learning, but I’m learning to advocate for myself, to ask for help when I need it, and, crucially, to communicate my understanding of my rights.
