Discussing modern cultural trends

Diving into German Culture: Talking About Trends

Okay, so here I am, six months in Berlin, and let me tell you, learning German has been… well, it’s been a rollercoaster. I thought I’d mastered the basics – Hallo, Wie geht es dir? – but then I went to a “Kiez-Party” (that’s a local, casual party) and realised I was still tripping over myself. But one thing I’ve realised is that understanding German isn’t just about knowing the words; it’s about understanding how people talk, especially when they’re discussing what’s cool, what’s not, and what everyone’s obsessed with. And that’s where things got really interesting.

The Language of Döner and TikTok

The first time I really started to get it was at the Imbiss – that’s a little takeaway place selling Döner – with my colleague, Markus. We were just grabbing lunch, and he was scrolling through TikTok. He showed me a video of someone doing a ridiculous dance trend.

“Schau mal! Das ist total verrückt, oder?” he said, gesturing at the phone. (Look! That’s totally crazy, right?)

I nodded, completely lost. “Was ist… TikTok?” I asked, feeling a bit stupid.

He laughed and explained, “TikTok ist eine App, wo Leute kurze Videos machen. Es geht um Trends, Musik, Tanzen… Alles!” (TikTok is an app where people make short videos. It’s about trends, music, dancing… everything!). I started learning words like Trend, Viral, Influencer, and Challenge. Suddenly, conversations about the latest pop music, fashion, and memes weren’t just baffling noises.

Ordering Coffee & Discussing Indie Bands

Speaking of pop music, I went to a small café last week with a girl I met at work, Lena. We were talking about music, and she was really into this indie band, “Franzi & Die Schatten.” She described them as “total Underground, aber ihre Musik ist so authentisch.” (totally underground, but their music is so authentic.)

I asked, “Was ist authentisch?” Lena explained, “Es bedeutet, dass sie nicht nur versuchen, mainstream zu sein, sondern ihre eigene Musik machen, die echt ist.” (It means they don’t just try to be mainstream, but they make their own music that’s real.) I added, “Ich verstehe! Ich mag auch Musik, die echt ist.” (I understand! I like music that’s real too.) I started to use phrases like Ich mag diese Band (I like this band) and Ich finde ihre Musik interessant (I find their music interesting). It felt… actually useful!

Navigating Misunderstandings (and Hilarious Mistakes)

There were definitely a few moments where I completely misread the situation. I was trying to talk to a group of university students about “Streaming” – they were talking about Netflix, Spotify, and all the different ways to listen to music. I blurted out, “Ich lese gerne Bücher!” (I like to read books!), completely oblivious to the fact that “Streaming” has nothing to do with reading. Markus quickly explained that “Streaming” meant watching movies and music online. It was mortifying, but also hilarious! It’s a good reminder to always listen carefully and ask for clarification when you’re not sure.

Useful Phrases for Discussing Trends

Here are a few phrases that I’ve found really helpful when talking about modern trends in German:

  • Was ist hip? (What’s cool?)
  • Ist das in? (Is that trendy?)
  • Ich finde das cool, aber… (I find that cool, but…) – Useful for expressing a slightly hesitant opinion.
  • Das ist viral, oder? (That’s going viral, right?)
  • Ich bin noch nicht up to date mit dem. (I’m not yet up-to-date with that.) – A great way to admit you’re new to something.

My Next Steps: Immersing Myself

I’m planning on going to a Flohmarkt (flea market) this weekend – they’re a big deal here and a fantastic way to see what people are interested in. I’m hoping to pick up some cool, vintage clothes and maybe even hear some conversations about the latest trends. And honestly, I’m going to keep listening – to the radio, to people talking on the street, to Markus explaining things. The more I listen, the more I understand, and the more confidently I can talk about these Trends. It’s still a challenge, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Weiter so! (Keep it up!)
